The Mekong Delta, home to approximately 17 million people and responsible for more than half of Vietnam's rice production, faces some of the most severe climate change risks of any agricultural region in Southeast Asia.

Recent research has complicated earlier projections by identifying subsidence — the gradual sinking of delta land due to groundwater extraction and reduced sediment deposition from upstream dams — as a threat potentially more immediate than sea-level rise alone.

Adaptation strategies under discussion include managed retreat from the most vulnerable coastal areas, transition to salt-tolerant crop varieties, restoration of mangrove buffer zones, and renegotiation of upstream water-sharing arrangements with Mekong riparian states.
