Lật Tẩy Lời Thề Dòng Da-tô (1)
Sau đây là nguyên văn lời thề độc Gia Nhập Dòng Da Tô như được
ghi lại theo biên bản Kì Họp Quốc Hội thứ 62, họp lần 3, từ Hồ Sơ
Quốc Hội Hoa Kỳ,(Lịch Viện số 397, Phúc Trình số 1523, ngày 15 tháng
Hai nắm 1913, trang 3215-3215), đã bị xé bỏ. Lời thề được trích dẫn
bởi Charles Didier trong sách Thế Giới Ngầm La Mã (Subterranean
Rome, New York 1843), dịch từ nguyên văn Pháp Ngữ.
Tiến Sĩ Alberto Rivera, người thoát hiểm khỏi dòng Da Tô năm
1967, xác nhận nghi lễ kết nạp và rằng lời thề ông chịu hoàn toàn
giống như chúng tôi ghi lại.
Khi một tu sĩ dòng Da Tô cấp thấp được thăng chức để mà thừa hành, y
được thuyên chuyển đến Tu Viện Dòng Giáo Phẩm, nơi đó chỉ có ba
người khác hiện diện, thầy trưởng hay Bề Trên đứng trước bàn thờ.
Mỗi bên có một tu sĩ đứng yên, một người cầm lá cờ vàng trắng, màu
của Giáo Hoàng, người kia lá cờ đen với hình một con dao và một chữ
thập màu đỏ, với từ INRI (viết tắt từ:
IESVS·NAZARENVS·REX·IVDÆORVM, Da Tô xứ Nã
Tát Lặc vua dân Do Thái, người dịch), bên dưới nữa cụm từ
IUSTUS NECAR REGES IMPIUS. Nghĩa là: Hoàn toàn chính nghĩa khi mà
tiêu diệt và trừ khử các vua chúa, nhà nước, và lãnh tụ bất kính hay
bội đạo. Trên sàn nhà có chữ thập đỏ để tên thỉnh sinh hay thí sinh
quì. Bề Trên đưa y một cây thập giá nhỏ đen, y cầm lấy bằng tay trái
và áp sát vào tim, Bề Trên lại cùng lúc đó hướng một con dao về phía
y, y nắm lấy đằng lưỡi về chĩa vào tim mình, Bề trên, mải nắm lấy
đằng cán, căn dặn y thế này:
Con trai ta, từ trước đến nay con đã được đào tạo để giả tá: giữa
Công Giáo La Mã làm một người Công Giáo La Mã, làm gián điệp thậm
chí ngay giữa anh em mình; không tin tưởng ai, và chẳng trông cậy
ai. Giữa đám Cải Cách làm một tên Cải Cách; giữa quân Vũ Cách Nặc
(Huguenot, ND) một gã Vũ Cách Nặc; giữa phường Gia Nễ Văn (Calvin,
ND) một thằng Gia Nễ Văn, giữa chúng Phản Thệ một kẻ Phản Thệ, và có
được niềm tin nơi chúng rồi, tìm cách diễn thuyết từ bục giảng của
chúng, và chối bỏ với tất cả tính hung hăng từ trong bản chất cả Tôn
Giáo Thánh Thiện và Giáo Hoàng của chúng ta; rồi thậm chí là hạ mình
xuống đến mức giữa bọn Do Thái làm một đứa Do Thái, để mà con có thể
thu thập mọi thông tin hữu ích cho Dòng Tu với tư cách một binh sĩ
trung thành với Giáo Hoàng.
Con đã được đào tạo để lẳng lặng gieo mầm mống tị hiềm và thù ghét
giữa cộng đồng, địa phương, quốc gia đang hòa bình, và khích bác
chúng gây đổ máu, lôi kéo chúng giao chiến với nhau, và gây ra khởi
loạn hay nội chiến ở các quốc gia đang độc lập và thịnh vượng, đang
nghiên cứu nghệ thuật và khoa học và tận hưởng diễm phúc hòa bình.
Chung phe với chiến sĩ và phối hợp với người anh em dòng Da Tô của
con, ngưới có thể đang tham gia phe kia, nhưng chống đối ra mặt phe
con đang dính líu, chỉ cần cuối cùng Giáo Hội trong những điều kiện
gắn liền với diễn tiến hòa bình và kết quả biện minh cho hành động.
Con đã được đào tạo để thực hiện công vụ tình báo, để thu thập các
số liệu, sự kiện và thông tin bằng năng lực của mình từ mọi nguồn,
để lấy được lòng tin trong vòng gia quyến Phản Thệ và bội đạo mọi
giai cấp mọi đặc điểm tính cách, cũng như với thương lái, giám đốc
ngân hàng, trong trường học và học viện, trong quốc hội và cơ quan
lập pháp, trong cơ quan hành pháp và hội đồng nhà nước, trở thành
tất cả với tất cả, vì Giáo Hoàng người chúng ta phụng sự cho đến
chết.
Con đã nhận lãnh tất cả những chỉ giáo từ trước đến nay như là một
tập sinh, một tân tòng, từng phục vụ với tư cách một đồng nguyện,
một thính tội và một linh mục, nhưng con vẫn chưa lĩnh hội những
giáo huấn cần thiết để thừa hành trong Binh Đoàn La Diệu Lạp
(Loyola) phụng sự Giáo Hoàng. Con phải phục vụ đúng lúc như là hình
cụ và đao phủ theo như chỉ thị bởi các Đấng Bề Trên con; vì không ai
có thể phục vụ nơi đây mà không dâng hiến công lao của mình bằng máu
của kẻ bội đạo, vì “không gây đổ máu không thể nào mà được cứu
rỗi.” Bởi vậy, để mà tự mình thích nghi với sứ mạng và chắc chắn
nhận được ơn cứu rỗi, con phải, thêm vào lời trước kia nguyền vâng
phục Dòng Tu và trung thành với Đức Giáo Hoàng, lặp lại theo ta:
Con, …......, ngay lúc này, trước sự hiện hữu của Đấng Toàn Năng,
Đức Mã Lệ (nguyên bản: Mary) Đồng Trinh Diễm Phúc, Tổng Thiên Thần
Mạch Khắc Nhĩ (NB: Michael), Thánh Ước Hàn (NB: John) Tẩy Giả Thiêng
Liêng, các Thánh Tông Đồ Thánh Thiện Bì Đắc (NB: Peter) và Bảo La
(NB: Paul) cùng tất cả các thánh và các đạo binh trên trời, và với
ngài, cha tinh thần của con, Thượng Quản Hiệp Hội Da Tô, sáng lập
bởi thánh Y Nạp Tước La Diệu Lạp (NB: Ignatius Loyola) nhiệm kỳ Giáo
Hoàng Bảo La Đệ Tam và tiếp tục hiện hữu cho đến hôm nay, bởi lòng
Đức Trinh Nữ Thân Mẫu Chúa Trời và quyền trượng Đấng Da Tô Cơ Đốc,
tuyên bố và thề nguyền, rằng Đức Thánh Cha Giáo Hoàng chính là Nhiếp
Chính của Đấng Da Tô Cơ Đốc là lãnh đạo duy nhất và thật sự của Nhà
Thờ Công Giáo Hoàn Vũ khắp thế giới; và rằng với chìa khóa hiệp
thông và tuyệt thông, trao cho ngài bởi Đấng Cứu Chuộc con, Da Tô Cơ
Đốc, ngài có quyền năng truất phế các hoàng đế, thân vương, nhà
nước, liên hiệp, và chính phủ bội đạo, tất cả đều bất chính vì không
có chuẩn y linh thiêng của ngài và rằng chúng có thể chắc chắn phải
bị diệt trừ.
Bởi vậy, với toàn thể năng lực của mình con sẽ và quyết bảo vệ tín
điều về quyền lực và qui định của Đức Thánh Cha chống lại bọn giặc
cướp từ bất kỳ chính quyền bội đạo hay Phản Thệ nào, nhất là phái Lộ
Đức (phiên âm Hán Việt từ Luther, không phải Đức Mẹ Lộ Đức/Lourdes,
ND) các nước Đức Ý Chí (HV, Deutsch; NB, Germany), Hòa Lan, Đan
Mạch, Thụy Điển, Na Uy, và bọn chính quyền và Giáo Hội ngụy tạo Anh
Cách Lan (NB, England) và Tô Cách Lan, và các chi nhánh tương tự
thiết lập tại Ái Nhĩ Lan và Mỹ Châu và mọi xứ khác; và tất cả những
tín đồ xét rằng chúng đã bị cướp đoạt và bội đạo, chống lại Giáo Hội
Mẹ La Mã. Bây giờ con khước từ và chối bỏ tất cả lòng trung thành
với bất kỳ hoàng đế, thân vương, hoặc nhà nước bị chỉ định là Phản
Thệ hay là Phóng Túng (Liberal), hay bất kỳ sự vâng phục nào trước
đây với bất kỳ luật lệ, quận trưởng, hay sĩ quan nào.
Con lại tiếp tới tuyên bố rằng giáo điều các Giáo Hội Anh Cách Lan
và Tô Cách Lan, của bọn Gia Nễ Văn, Vũ Cách Nặc và tất cả mang tên
Phản Thệ hay Phóng Túng đều đáng nguyền rủa và chính chúng cũng bị
nguyền rủa những giáo hội không từ bỏ những thứ như thế.
Con lại tiếp tới tuyên bằng, rằng con sẽ giúp đỡ, bang trợ, và
khuyến dụ tất cả hay bất kỳ thừa sai nào của Đức Thánh Cha bất cứ
nơi nào con hiện diện, ở Thụy Sĩ, Đức Ý Chí, Hòa Lan, Đan Mạch, Thụy
Điển, Na Uy, Anh Cách Lan, Ái Nhĩ Lan, hay Mỹ Châu, hay ở bất kỳ
vương quốc hay lãnh thổ nào con sẽ đến, gắng hết sức mình xóa bỏ các
giáo lý bội đạo Phản Thệ và Phóng Túng và tiêu diệt toàn bộ các
chính quyền, luật pháp, hay bất kỳ thứ gì ngoài những thứ đó nữa.
Con lại tiếp tới thề nguyền và tuyên bố, rằng bất kể con có được
miễn trừ, để mà thừa nhận tôn giáo của chính mình cũng là bội đạo,
vì công vụ rao giảng ích lợi cho Giáo Hội Mẹ, giữ bí mật và riêng tư
tất cả khuyến dụ của mọi thừa sai Giáo Hội, để mà họ có thể ủy thác
trách nhiệm cho con và không phải tiết lộ, trực tiếp hay gián tiếp,
bằng từ ngữ, văn viết hay bất kì trường hợp gì khác; mà phải thi
hành tất cả mệnh lệnh ban bố ra, được giao phó cho con phụ trách hay
được nhận thức là nơi con, bởi ngài, cha tinh thần của con, và bất
kỳ chức sắc nào trong thỏa ước linh thiêng này.
Con lại tiếp tới thề nguyền và tuyên bố, rằng con sẽ không có chính
kiến hay ý chí gì của riêng mình, hay bất kỳ kiêng dè trí tuệ nào,
thậm chí chỉ còn như là một tử thi hay một di hài (perinde ac
cadaver), mà sẽ không ngần ngại thi hành mỗi và mọi mệnh lệnh mà con
nhận lãnh được từ các đấng bề trên con trong Đoàn Dân Quân của Đức
Giáo Hoàng và Đấng Da Tô Cơ Đốc.
Rằng con sẽ đi bất kì nơi đâu con được sai phái, đế những vùng băng
đóng phương Bắc, những miền cát nóng Phi Châu, hay những rừng rậm Ấn
Độ, đến những trung tâm văn minh ở Âu Châu, thậm chí đến cả những xó
xỉnh hoang vu man di mọi rợ Mỹ Châu, không hề phàn nàn hay bực dọc,
và sẽ tỏ ra quy phục tất cả những gì giao tiếp với con.
Con lại tiếp tới thề nguyền và tuyên bố rằng con sẽ, khi cơ hội hiện
hữu, kích động và khơi mào chiến tranh không khoan nhượng, bí mật
hay công khai, chống lại tất cả quân bội đạo, Phản Thệ hay Phóng
Túng, khi con được chỉ định phải làm, để mà tiêu diệt và trừ khử
chúng khỏi toàn thể mặt đất; và con sẽ không dung thứ bất kỳ đối
tượng tuổi tác, giới tính, hay hoàn cảnh nào; rằng con sẽ treo cổ,
phá hại, nấu luộc, tùng xẻo, siết cổ và chôn sống tất cả bọn bội đạo
ô nhục đó, rạch toang dạ dày và dạ con bọn đàn bà và dập nát đầu đám
con nít vào tường để mà vĩnh viễn diệt trừ dòng giống đáng tởm chúng
nó. Rằng khi việc như thế không thể thực hiện công khai, con sẽ bí
mật sử dụng chén độc, dây siết cổ, thép dao găm, hay đạn chì, không
cần đếm xỉa gì đến danh dự, phẩm giá, hay uy thế của một kẻ hay cả
đám, dù hoàn cảnh cuộc đời chúng thế nào, công hay tư, khi con ở bất
kì thời điểm nào được chỉ định phải làm thế bời các thừa sai của
Giáo Hoàng hoặc Bề Trên của Hội Huynh Đệ Đức Tin Thánh, của Dòng Da
Tô.
Để chứng thực điều này, con nguyện dâng hiến cuộc đời con, linh hồn
con và tất cả mọi năng lực thể xác của con và với lưỡi dao giờ con
nhận lãnh, con sẽ ký tên của con bằng chính máu con để làm chứn;
rằng nếu con chúng tỏ mình bội nghịch hay yếu lòng khi quyết định,
cầu mong các anh em và binh sĩ đồng đội của Đoàn Dân Quân Giáo Hoàng
chặt tay chặt chân con đứt lìa, cứa cổ con từ mang tai này qua mang
tai kia, bụng con rạch toang và lưu huỳnh bùng cháy phừng phừng
trong đó và với tất cả những hình phạt sẽ giáng lên đầu con trên mặt
đất và linh hồn con sẽ bị mãi mãi quỷ dữ hành hạ trong hỏa ngục đời
đời.
Tất cả những điều trên, con, ………, thề trước Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa và
Thánh Thể Thiêng Liêng con bây giờ sẽ nhận, sẽ thực hiện và về phần
con thì sẽ giữ không để vi phạm; và thỉnh cầu tất cả các đạo thiên
binh siêu phàm và vinh quang Thánh Thể Mình Thánh Chúa, và tiếp tục
chứng kiến y như vậy tên của con được viết lên và với mũi dao nhúng
vào chính máu con và niêm phong lại trước thỏa ước linh thiêng này.
(Y nhận Bánh Mình Thánh Chúa từ Bề Trên và ghi tên mình lên trên
bằng mũi dao thấm chính máu mình từ bên tim y.)
Bề Trên:
Bây giờ hãy đứng lên trên chân con và cha sẽ hướng dẫn cho con trong
giáo lý cần thiết để tự giới thiệu mình cho bất kỳ thành viên cùa
Dòng Da Tô thuộc về đẳng cấp này.
Bước đầu, con, như là một người anh em cùng dòng Da Tô, sẽ làm dấu
thánh giá thường lệ với nhau như bất kỳ người Công Giáo La Mã nào;
sau đó một người bắt chéo cổ tay, lòng bàn tay mở ra, người kia trả
lời bằng cách bắt chéo bàn chân, bàn chân này lên trên bàn chân kia;
người thứ nhất dùng ngón trỏ bàn tay phải chỉ vào lòng bàn tay trái,
người kia ngòn trỏ bàn tay trái chỉ vào lòng bàn tay phải; người thứ
nhất dùng bàn tay phải quay một quanh đầu mình rồi chạm vào, người
kia tiếp tới bàn tay trái chạm vào bên trái thân mình ngay dưới tim;
người thứ nhất dùng tay phải quệt ngang cổ người kia, người sau lại
dùng tay trái với một con dao dọc xuống dạ dày và bụng của người
trước. Người thứ nhất sau đó sẽ nói Iustum, người kia trả lời Necar;
người thứ nhất Reges, người kia Impius (ý nghĩa đã được giải thích.)
“Người thứ nhất sẽ đưa ra một mẩu giấy nhò gấp một cách kì lạ, bốn
lần, và người kia sẽ cắt theo chiều dọc và khi mở ra sẽ thấy tên
Jesu được viết trên đỉnh và hai tay dang của thánh giá ba lần. Con
sẽ đưa ra và nhận lại những câu vấn đáp sau đây (có thể thay đổi do
tùy theo cách dịch và phiên âm các tên:)
Hỏi: Người từ đâu tới?
Đáp: Từ Đức Tin Thiêng Liêng.
Hỏi: Người phục vụ ai?
Đáp: Đấng Chúa Cha ở La Mã, Đức Giáo Hoàng và Giáo Hội Công Giáo La
Mã Hoàn Vũ khắp thế giới.
Hỏi: Ai chỉ đạo người?
Đáp: Người Kế Thừa Thánh Y Nạp Tước La Diệu Lạp, đáng sáng lậ Hiệp
Hội Da Tô hay Binh Sĩ Da Tô.
Hỏi: Ai thu nhận người?
Đáp: Một Bậc Đáng Kính tóc bạc.
Hỏi: Như thế nào?
Đáp: Với một lưỡi dao tuốt trần, tôi quỳ trên thánh giá dưới cờ của
Đức Giáo Hoàng và của Dòng Tu thiêng liêng chúng ta.
Hỏi: Người chịu lời thề chưa?
Đáp: Tôi đã thề, tiêu diệt bọn bội đạo và chính phủ và lãnh tụ của
chúng, và không dung thứ bất kì đối tượng tuổi tác, giới tính hay
hoàn cảnh nào. Chỉ còn như là một cái xác không hề có chính kiến hay
ý chí gì của chính mình, mà hoàn toàn vâng phục các Đấng Bề Trên của
tôi trong mọi thứ mà không e ngại phàn nàn gì hết.
Hỏi: Người sẽ làm thế chứ?
Đáp: Tôi sẽ làm thế.
Hỏi: Người hành trình thế nào?
Đáp: Bằng thuyền của ngư phủ Bì Đắc.
Hỏi: Người đi đâu?
Đáp: Đến bốn góc hoàn cầu.
Hỏi: Vì mục đích gì?
Đáp: Để vâng phục mệnh lệnh của cha trưởng và Bề Trên và thi hành
thánh ý của Đức Giáo Hoàng và đáp ứng trung thành mọi điều kiện
thiết lập bởi lời thề tôi.
Vậy người hãy lên đường, đến mọi nơi trên thế gian và chiếm hữu tất
cả đất đai nhân danh Đức Giáo Hoàng. Bất kỳ kẻ nào không chấp nhận
Đức Ngài như là Đấng Đại Diện Đấng Da Tô Cơ Đốc và Nhiếp Chính của
Chúa trên Trái Đất, để kẻ đó bị nguyền rủa và hủy diệt.”

[The following is the text of the Jesuit Extreme Oath of
Induction as recorded in the Journals of the 62nd Congress,
3rd Session, of the United States Congressional Record (House
Calendar No. 397, Report No. 1523, 15 February, 1913, pp.
3215-3216), from which it was subsequently torn out. The Oath
is also quoted by Charles Didier in his book Subterranean
Rome (New York, 1843), translated from the French original.

confirms that the induction ceremony and the text of the Jesuit Oath which he took were identical to what we have
cited below. – A. N.] |
When a Jesuit of the
minor rank is to be elevated to command, he is conducted into
the Chapel of the Convent of the Order, where there
are only three others present, the principal or Superior
standing in front of the altar.
On either side stands a monk, one of
whom holds a banner of yellow and white, which are the
Papal colors, and the other a black banner with
a dagger and red cross above a skull and crossbones, with
the word INRI, and below them the words IUSTUM
NECAR REGES IMPIUS.
The meaning of which is:
It is just to
exterminate or annihilate impious or heretical Kings,
Governments, or Rulers
Upon the floor is a red cross
at which the postulant or candidate kneels.
The Superior
hands him a small black crucifix, which he takes in his left hand
and presses to his heart, and the Superior at the same time presents
to him a dagger, which he grasps by the blade and
holds the point against his heart, the Superior still holding it by
the hilt, and thus addresses the postulant:
(The Superior speaks:)
My son, heretofore you have been taught to act the dissembler:
among Roman Catholics to be a Roman Catholic, and
to be a spy even among your own brethren; to believe no man, to
trust no man. Among the Reformers, to be a Reformer; among the
Huguenots, to be a Huguenot; among the Calvinists, to be a
Calvinist; among other Protestants, generally to be a
Protestant; and obtaining their confidence, to seek even to
preach from their pulpits, and to denounce with all the
vehemence in your nature our Holy Religion and
the Pope; and even to descend so low as to become a
Jew among Jews, that you might be enabled to gather together all
information for the benefit of your Order as a faithful soldier
of the Pope.
You have been taught to plant
insidiously the seeds of jealousy and hatred between
communities, provinces, states that were at peace, and to incite
them to deeds of blood, involving them in war with each other,
and to create revolutions and civil wars in countries that were
independent and prosperous, cultivating the arts and the
sciences and enjoying the blessings of peace; to take sides with
the combatants and to act secretly with your brother Jesuit, who
might be engaged on the other side, but openly opposed to that
with which you might be connected, only that the Church might be
the gainer in the end, in the conditions fixed in the treaties
for peace and that the end justifies the means.
You have been
taught your duty as a spy, to gather all statistics, facts and
information in your power from every source; to ingratiate
yourself into the confidence of the family circle of Protestants
and heretics of every class and character, as well as that of
the merchant, the banker, the lawyer, among the schools and
universities, in parliaments and legislatures, and the
judiciaries and councils of state, and to be all things to all
men, for the Pope’s sake, whose servants we are unto death.
You have received all your
instructions heretofore as a novice, a neophyte, and
have served as co-adjurer, confessor and priest, but you have
not yet been invested with all that is necessary to command in
the Army of Loyola in the service of the
Pope. You must serve the proper time as the instrument
and executioner as directed by your superiors; for none can
command here who has not consecrated his labours with the blood
of the heretic; for "without the shedding of blood no man can
be saved".
Therefore, to fit yourself for your work and make
your own salvation sure, you will, in addition to your former
oath of obedience to your order and allegiance to the
Pope, repeat after me:

I_______________ , now in the presence of Almighty God,
the blessed Virgin Mary, the blessed St. John the
Baptist, the Holy Apostles, St. Peter and St. Paul, and all the
saints, sacred host of Heaven, and to you, my Ghostly Father,
the superior general of the Society of Jesus,
founded by St. Ignatius Loyola, in the pontification of Paul the
Third, and continued to the present, do by the womb of the
Virgin, the matrix of God, and the rod of Jesus Christ, declare
and swear that His Holiness, the Pope, is Christ’s Vice-Regent
and is the true and only head of the Catholic or Universal
Church throughout the earth; and that by the virtue of the keys
of binding and loosing given to His Holiness by my Saviour,
Jesus Christ, he hath power to depose heretical Kings, Princes,
States, Commonwealths, and Governments, and they may be safely
destroyed.
Therefore to the utmost of my power
I will defend this doctrine and His Holiness’s right and custom
against all usurpers of the heretical or Protestant authority
whatever, especially the Lutheran Church of Germany, Holland,
Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and the now pretended authority
and Churches of England and Scotland,
and the branches of same now established in Ireland and on the
continent of America and elsewhere and all adherents in regard
that they may be usurped and heretical, opposing the sacred
Mother Church of Rome. I do now denounce and disown any
allegiance as due to any heretical king, prince or State, named
Protestant or Liberal, or obedience to any of their laws,
magistrates or officers.
I do further declare the doctrine of
the Churches of England and Scotland of the Calvinists,
Huguenots, and others of the name of Protestants or Masons to be
damnable, and they themselves to be damned who will not forsake
the same. I do further declare that I will help, assist, and
advise all or any of His Holiness’s agents, in any place where I
should be, in Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Ireland or America,
or in any other kingdom or territory I shall come to, and do my
utmost to extirpate the heretical Protestant or Masonic
doctrines and to destroy all their pretended powers, legal or
otherwise.
I do further promise and declare that,
notwithstanding, I am dispensed with to assume any religion
heretical for the propagation of the Mother Church’s
interest; to keep secret and private all her agents’
counsels from time to time, as they entrust me, and not to
divulge, directly or indirectly, by word, writing or
circumstances whatever; but to execute all that should be
proposed, given in charge, or discovered unto me by you, my
Ghostly Father, or any of this sacred order. I do further
promise and declare that I will have no opinion or will of my
own or any mental reservation whatever, even as a corpse or
cadaver (perinde ac cadaver), but will unhesitatingly obey each
and every command that I may receive from my superiors in the
militia of the Pope and of Jesus Christ.
That I will go to any part of the
world whithersoever I may be sent, to the frozen regions north,
jungles of India, to the centres of civilization of Europe, or
to the wild haunts of the barbarous savages of America
without murmuring or repining, and will be submissive in all
things, whatsoever is communicated to me.
I do further promise
and declare that I will, when opportunity presents, make and
wage relentless war, secretly and openly, against all heretics,
Protestants and Masons, as I am directed to do, to extirpate
them from the face of the whole earth; and that I will spare
neither age, sex nor condition, and that will hang, burn, waste,
boil, flay, strangle, and bury alive these infamous heretics;
rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women, and crush their
infants’ heads against the walls in order to annihilate their
execrable race.
That when the same cannot be done
openly I will secretly use the poisonous cup, the strangulation
cord, the steel of the poniard, or the leaden bullet, regardless
of the honor, rank, dignity or authority of the persons,
whatever may be their condition in life, either public or
private, as I at any time may be directed so to do by any agents
of the Pope or Superior of the Brotherhood
of the Holy Father of the Society of Jesus.
In confirmation of which I hereby
dedicate my life, soul, and all corporal powers, and with the
dagger which I now receive I will subscribe my name written in
my blood in testimony thereof; and should I prove false, or
weaken in my determination, may my brethren and fellow soldiers
of the militia of the Pope cut off my hands and
feet and my throat from ear to ear, my belly be opened and
sulphur burned therein with all the punishment that can be
inflicted upon me on earth, and my soul shall be tortured by
demons in eternal hell forever.
That I will in voting always
vote for a Knight of Columbus in preference to a
Protestant, especially a Mason, and that I will
leave my party so to do; that if two Catholics are on the ticket
I will satisfy myself which is the better supporter of
Mother Church and vote accordingly. That I will not deal
with or employ a Protestant if in my power to deal with or
employ a Catholic. That I will place Catholic girls in
Protestant families that a weekly report may be made of the
inner movements of the heretics. That I will provide
myself with arms and ammunition that I may be in
readiness when the word is passed, or I am commanded to defend
the Church either as an individual or with the militia of
the Pope.
All of which I,_______________, do
swear by the blessed Trinity and blessed sacrament which I am
now to receive to perform and on part to keep this my oath.
In
testimony hereof, I take this most holy and blessed sacrament of
the Eucharist and witness the same further with my name written
with the point of this dagger dipped in my own blood and seal in
the face of this holy sacrament.
(He receives the wafer from the Superior and
writes his name with the point of his dagger dipped in his own
blood taken from over his heart.)
(Superior speaks:)
You will now rise to your feet and I will instruct you in the
Catechism necessary to make yourself known to any member of the
Society of Jesus belonging to this rank. In the
first place, you, as a Brother Jesuit, will with
another mutually make the ordinary sign of the cross as any
ordinary Roman Catholic would; then one crosses his wrists,
the palms of his hands open, and the other in answer crosses his
feet, one above the other; the first points with forefinger of
the right hand to the centre of the palm of the left, the other
with the forefinger of the left hand points to the centre of the
palm of the right; the first then with his right hand makes a
circle around his head, touching it; the other then with the
forefinger of his left hand touches the left side of his body
just below his heart; the first then with his right hand draws
it across the throat of the other, and the latter then with a
dagger down the stomach and abdomen of the first.
The first then says Iustum;
and the other answers Necar; the first Reges;
the other answers Impious. The first will then
present a small piece of paper folded in a peculiar manner, four
times, which the other will cut longitudinally and on opening
the name Jesu will be found written upon the head and
arms of a cross three times. You will then give and receive with
him the following questions and answers:
From whither do you come? Answer: The Holy faith.
Whom do you serve? Answer: The Holy Father at Rome, the
Pope, and the Roman Catholic Church Universal throughout the
world.
Who commands you? Answer: The Successor of St. Ignatius
Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus or the Soldiers of
Jesus Christ.
Who received you? Answer: A venerable man in white hair.
How? Answer: With a naked dagger, I kneeling upon the
cross beneath the banners of the Pope and of our sacred order.
Did you take an oath? Answer: I did, to destroy
heretics and their governments and rulers, and to spare
neither age, nor sex, nor condition; to be as a corpse without
any opinion or will of my own, but to implicitly obey my
Superiors in all things without hesitation or murmuring.
Will you do that? Answer: I will.
How do you travel? Answer: In the bark of Peter the
fisherman.
Whither do you travel? Answer: To the four quarters of
the globe.
For what purpose? Answer: To obey the orders of my
General and Superiors and execute the will of the Pope and
faithfully fulfill the conditions of my oaths.
Go ye, then, into all the world and take possession of all lands
in the name of the Pope. He who will not accept him as the Vicar
of Jesus and his Vice-Regent on earth, let him be accursed and
exterminated.
